PROJECT STYLED

Orange Lutheran'22
I have always admired the fashion industry from a young age. The first time that I truly fell in love with the creation of clothing was my first sewing class. I had been enrolled in the class locally by my mom and I remember thinking to myself after I sewed my first few stitches on the machine, this is what I want to do. I continued weekly to learn how to pattern design and create garments. I remember being enthralled with the red carpets, vogue magazines, and couture pieces I would see on the internet; I would bring them and try to replicate what I was seeing. It wasn't until I became 12 that I was introduced to fast fashion and the corruption that slayed behind all of the media. I was at first confused; how could brands not care about their negative impact on the planet? I continued to research at the time, but I didn't make the switch to ethical clothing until my teens. I found that I could no longer think in the consumer mindset, but one that is open to up cycling . Today, I am a current junior who attends Orange Lutheran High School. I continue to design clothing which can be seen on rylenschmiddesigns.com while also helping to educate that the perception of ethically shopping is hard. In fact, there are a multitude of ways a person can alter simple lifestyle choices which will result in saving the earth. Through project STYLED I hope to see a change in saving the planet for the future generations. I hope that eventually the world will be how my five year old eyes viewed it sitting in my sewing machine: unflawed.
Ayah Mohamed
Rosary Academy '22
Hello everyone! You probably don’t know who I am, so let me go ahead and introduce myself. My name is Ayah Mohamed from Orange, California and I currently am a junior at Rosary Academy. My passion for art and design has always been a huge part of my life ever since I could remember. I was always begging my parents to let me paint on whatever blank canvas I could get my hands on, whether that be the walls or the refrigerator door. Finally when I was enrolled in art class, I could let my creative ideas free flow and use my imagination in anyway I wanted without any restrictions in my way. It was my escape from reality. It soon became apart of who I am. In addition to my art class I was enrolled in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts proved to be the fundamental beginning of my love for design and fashion. We started with a few small projects that revolved around sewing pillow cases, shirts, and skirts. After maturing, our troop decided that it was time we began to dig deeper into the realities of the fashion industry. Specifically, we learned about the fast fashion industry. Within a few simple Google searches, I was able to see the cruel reality of the growing industry. The environmental consequences were astronomical and the workers conditions were inhuman. Seeing all the harmful consequences sparked emotional within myself and from then on I made it my mission to educate not only myself but others. Through my passion of art and design, I wanted to educate everyone in different methods and techniques to become more eco-friendly shoppers.
